We are all too often told by someone that we are too old, too young, too different, too much the same, and those comments can be devastating.

About This Quote

When someone says that you are old, you assume they are referring to your age. When they say that you are young, they may be referring to your maturity level. When someone says that you are different, they may be referring to your views on the world. When someone says that you are too old, too young, or too many things (different is probably the most common), it can be seen as a criticism.

The message is often meant with the best of intentions but the wrong tone sends out a message that contradicts what they mean to say. For example, when someone says that you are too old to travel by yourself, it is meant with the best of intentions but the way they say it sends out an unhelpful message. It seems like they meant well but it comes off as accusatory.

If someone said “You’re too old to travel by yourself!” in a demeaning tone without any concern for how it might effect you, then you would likely feel insulted and somewhat upset.
